Emotionally intense images of retired Philadelphia police captain Ray Lewis - who has joined the #OccupyWallStreet protests - being arrested by the NYPD.
Captain Lewis has been outspoken against the NYPD’s wrongful use of violence against peaceful protesters.
From what I have seen, Ray Lewis’ conduct defines honor, bravery, and dignity.
There is a media blackout on images of his participation in the protest, and on his arrest:
It’s proved impossible for me to get this shot of former Philadelphia Police Cpt. Ray Lewis being arrested, published anywhere. I was adamantly rebuffed by the Philadelphia Inquirer, NYT, local NY papers, and Newsweek, before even looking at the photograph. One of the only published photos of this paradoxical and intense event is located here at the NYC Observer:

Make this viral and they will come.
Ray Lewis gets 2 posts this morning, because this needs to be seen. I’m not even sure why, but this pair of photos made me cry hysterically.
oh my god. so much props to this man. this country has turned into utter fucking insanity.
signal boost or die
I really hope all of these protesters are okay. I know they’re getting hurt but I really just want them to be okay.
ok normally i don’t reblog downers (no judgement, it’s just not what this blog is for), but this media blackout thing is getting absurd, so — FUCKING SIGNAL BOOST.
Signal boosting on account of Holy Crap.
“Just to clarify to all of the people who have hard-ons for police beating protesters:
This isn’t about this officer or the judge or the little old lady being without flaw. This serves as an important counter argument to the concept that the protesters are all unwashed, unemployed, anarchist hipsters living on their parents’ dime and whining about it.
You can divert your usual arguments and go into how this guy must have been doing something wrong (which you would condemn in any other police brutality article), but that doesn’t change the fact that it brings light to another kind of protester.
And, more importantly, it humanizes the victim. ‘Police arrest 30 at OWS, 7 sent to hospital’ allows people to picture them all as poop-flinging anarchists. Hearing that a veteran or a former police captain is being beaten makes that person into a human with a history that is completely separate from their role in the protest.
You can still dislike it. You can still assume that he was at fault. You can still dislike OWS. That’s fine. But don’t act obtuse about why this sort of article is important.”
