HOT TOYS / CAPTAIN AMERICA / REVIEW

After months of waiting, Cap finally came home on Friday! … And then spent the whole weekend patiently awaiting my attention whilst I worked and watched me some Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. (Spoiler: Gary Oldman is amazing.) I finally had the time and energy to pull him out of the box last night, and here’s what I found.

^ Here’s my hand for scale. This sixth scale figures are a nice size to me — plenty of room for details, but not unwieldy. He came with clenched fists, open hands, open fists for the shield and a pointing index finger with open fist for the guns. The fingers are made of some nice semi-flexible resin that has a little give, which makes it a lot easier to insert the props. (But they do suffer the same problem I’ve seen in my other Hot Toys figures: they’re annoying to attach to the wrist, and they seem to pop off at the slightest provocation.)

^ Who loves details? I LOVE DETAILS. Check out the little reinforced holes on his belt!

^ This is one moleskin and cast-iron frying pan away from being artfully arranged hipster paraphernalia. The shield, by the way, isn’t made of metal — it’s constructed from the same lightweight plastic as the Iron Man armor. That was a bit of a let-down, but it’s still the best looking toy shield I’ve ever seen.

^ And here he is in action. At first he was very difficult to pose — so much so that I very nearly wrote Hot Toys a Strongly Worded Letter — but as it turns out, his joints are just really, really stiff straight out of the box. Once I got them loosened up, he became a lot more fun and a lot less frustrating, but he does still suffer from some irritating quirks. His arm mobility is hindered by the quilted shoulder pads and sculpt; you can’t raise his arms above shoulder-height or throw them across the body. (Which is annoying if you want his shield to actually, well, shield.) His torso could also use an extra point of articulation. Overall, his poseability isn’t spectacular, and I think most of the limitations arise from the close-fitting costume. But would I trade the disgustingly detailed and well-fitted jumpsuit for a better range of motion? Nah.
… Of course, now that I’ve gone to the trouble of creating a nice tableau with him and Tony, I’m hesitant to disturb it with some inappropriate posing shenanigans. But I’m sure I’ll get bored someday. >.>b
